"Young Explorers of Our Seas" Citizen Science Project 

The most comprehensive citizen science project conducted in Türkiye, "Young Explorers of Our Seas" aims to research the impacts of climate change on Türkiye’s seas.

Guided by METU Science Communication Group and organized with contributions from METU CLIMATE , METU Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS), METU Design Factory, and other METU components, the citizen science project engages participants of all age groups in 28 coastal provinces of Türkiye and TRNC. Using in-house designed and produced devices, volunteers measure various parameters pertaining to climate change in the seas.

The data collected by volunteers will be analyzed by academics and researchers at METU IMS and METU CLIMATE, with a view to generating the most extensive citizen science publication on Türkiye's seas.

By conducting on-site measurements, the project reduces the need for long-term expeditions by research vessels, resulting in fuel savings and a smaller carbon footprint.
