METU CLIMATE Center was established to understand the changing climate and its impacts a well as to develop adaptation and solution proposals.

METU CLIMATE: Climate Change and Sustainable Development Implementation and Research Center brings together academics of METU working primarily in climate change and sustainability areas to ensure that the related studies are conducted in harmony and cooperation around a specific strategy and hence their contributions to national obligations and priorities are maximized. METU CLIMATE was founded in November 2022 as an Implementation and Research Center as stipulated by the Council of Higher Education, and works at the national and international levels to contribute to the development of scientific, realistic and reliable climate and sustainable development strategies and policies required by our country and society.

Climate change is a global issue, and it has become well evident that its environmental impact is not limited to a rise in temperature. Climate change has adverse impacts not only on the nature, but also on social and economic wellbeing. Building a climate-friendly, low-carbon society and economy is an irrefutable imperative for sustainability at local, regional, and global levels. This requires numerous scientific studies to be conducted, and strategies, policies, and technologies to be developed. Furthermore, coordination is mandatory to ensure the integration of these improvements.

Middle East Technical University Climate Change and Sustainable Development Implementation and Research Center (METU CLIMATE) was founded in response to these requirements. Located at METU Erdemli Campus and METU Research Park, the primary purpose of METU CLIMATE is to contribute at both national and international levels to the development of scientific, realistic and reliable climate and sustainable development strategies and policies required by our country and society. On the topic of climate change, which mandates interdisciplinary efforts, METU CLIMATE will enable METU’s departments and experts that already lead national and international policies, such as the National Climate Summit at METU and international frameworks like the EU Green Deal, Mission Ocean, and the UN Ocean Decade, to contribute to national priorities in a more cohesive system and to integrate to relevant national platforms. In this regard, the Center will bring together numerous departments and centers of various disciplines within and beyond METU, materializing interdisciplinary studies and projects through the resulting synergy.
